Maryland's Electric Aviation Laboratory is used to test engines and hydrogen fuel cell systems.
Laboratory equipment includes:
- 4 kW two- and four-stoke piston engines
- Generators and motors for hybridization
- EIS equipment and temperature chamber for battery tests
- Small aviation-grade PEM fuel cells of 0.3-2 kW power
- Industrial tanks and regulators of 130 bar
- Composite type-IV tanks of up to 450 bar
- Small and large load banks of 5 kW and 50 kW respectively
The laboratory also houses the 3 kW hybrid-electric engine test bed and 2 kW fuel cell test bed.
Laboratory facilities include:
- An engine hood room qualified for combustion and gaseous hydrogen fuel cell tests
- Space for assembly, instrumentation, and bench-top testing of propulsion system components
- Secure hydrogen storage
